Dutch police have arrested a 14-year-old girl after she sent a
tweet to American Airlines [ AAL 33.37 -0.3099 (-0.92%) ]
pretending to be a member of Al Qaeda and threatening an act
against the airline this summer.
The exchange became a viral sensation on Twitter over the weekend after a user called
"@QueenDemetriax_" tweeted she was "Ibrahim from Afghanistan," an Al Qaeda
member who planned
"something really big" on June 1.
The airline swiftly responded that it took such threats seriously and
that her IP address would be logged and reported to the FBI.
The user then sent multiple tweets back to the airline insisting that she was just a kid
and was joking. Her account was
subsequently suspended.
A police spokesman in the Dutch city of Rotterdam told CNBC the girl voluntarily reported to the police station and was arrested on the advice of prosecutors at
mid-afternoon Monday.
She is being held on suspicion of creating a false alarm.
"There was a lot of commotion over that tweet being sent," the
spokesman said.
