'Buhari And The Demons In His Party' - Leadership

Unknown | 6/26/2015 02:13:00 am | Be the first to comment!
Image result for buhariThe All Progressives Congress appears to have given its enemies a stick to beat the party. For two weeks now, the governing party has been at war with itself over the sharing of offices. And it’s getting messier.

In a gesture of serial defiance, the Senate not only rejected the party’s choice of candidates for Senate president and deputy, it also rejected the party’s list for other principal officers. The gangrene has spread to the House.

For its part, the Peoples Democratic Party is simply beside itself in an Fun of mockery. Its officials cannot believe their worst wishes will come true so soon. They are quietly stoking the flames, anxious to regroup and seize the current crisis in the APC as their resurrection launch pad.

And what better way to start than for Ike Ekweremadu to get a foot in the door as deputy Senate president in a deal that has taken the PDP out of the ICU?

That’s politics. Yet it is precisely in an attempt to prevent the variety of renegade politics that beset the PDP four years ago – when Aminu Tambuwal defied his party – that the APC has refused to sweep the current crisis under the carpet.

There are those who have argued that the party should get over itself and move on. It’s futile to hope that either Ekweremadu or Senate President Bukola Saraki will step down at this point. So, why persist in a war of attrition that is depleting the party’s goodwill and distracting it from the urgent tasks at hand?

Those who pursue this line of argument insist that if Saraki was good enough to invest himself in APC’s election campaign, surely he cannot be unworthy of a post in the National Assembly, which he contested for and won according to the rules of the Senate.

As for his teaming up with Ekweremadu, what’s the big deal? What is the difference between both parties, anyway? And was the APC not in clandestine defection talks with Ekweremadu and co at some point after Buhari’s victory in March? What’s the party mad about?

The matter is not so cut and dried. To suggest that APC and PDP are one and the same thing is to insult voters who could no longer endure the travesty of the latter and decided that enough was enough.

PDP was not and cannot be like any other party. The party, especially under Jonathan, was simply incomparable in its capacity for mischief, stealing and impunity. It is a disservice to our collective memory to forget that so soon.

Those who insist on party discipline do so because they have seen the misery and devastation that former President Goodluck Jonathan’s weakness brought upon the PDP and, ultimately, the country. Also, in a country where merit often takes the back seat, zoning has become a makeshift formula for deciding who gets what.

Whatever threatens zoning rocks the boat. Saraki’s presumptive strike toppled the party’s consensus on zoning and sent a mixed signal about his company and future ambition.

That’s obviously one other reason why the party is finding it hard to move on. The party’s arrangement, which favoured the Lawan-Akume pair for the Senate and the Gbajabiamila-Monguno for the House, was based on the calculation that these candidates have modest ambitions.

The party had hoped that Lawan’s emergence would kill two birds with one stone: it would settle the feeling of marginalisation in the North East and stave off any serious challenge for the nation’s top job in 2019.

The unspoken fear of those strongly opposed to Saraki is not only that he still has PDP blood running in his veins, but that, perhaps more than any other ranking senator, the Senate presidency could help him secure a bid for the presidency in four years’ time, or position him as a rallying point for the resurgence of the PDP at some future date.

If some of these speculations sound irrational it is because irrationality is the currency of politics. Who would have believed, for example, that an unknown Yusuf Lasun would become deputy speaker of the House by surreptitiously putting himself up for the position while at the same time voting for his party’s candidate for that position? Or that Tambuwal would be named as backing the same rebellion that brought his former party to its knees?

The party has to move forward, not by running away from, but by confronting its demons. And it would be foolhardy to leave the job to state governors who barely have control of their legislators. The party leadership is, regrettably, also diminished both by this crisis and from the allegations of favouritism and corruption that preceded it. There is an appalling lack of confidence and honesty to tackle the problem.

Shutting Saraki out or living in denial of his presidency will not work. Someone must engage Saraki and tell him that he cannot defy the party one day, claim to be remorseful the next and then turn around to insist on sharing positions in the Senate almost exclusively on his own terms.

For example, Senator Ali Ndume’s bid for the post of leader of the Senate is obviously a reward by the pro-Saraki group for Ndume’s rebellion. It might seem the smart and politically expedient thing to do, but it opens Saraki’s sincerity to question, complicates the problem in the House and further damages the party. This is not helped by Ndume’s indictment in the nation’s topmost security challenge at the moment for which he is still facing prosecution.

The task of stopping the drift now falls squarely on Buhari’s shoulders. He cannot outsource or purchase it by avoiding Saraki. He has promised not to meddle – which is good, but I have said before that not meddling is not the same thing as playing the ostrich. APC desperately needs leadership.

Buhari must admit that his indifference – however well meaning – was just as counterproductive as Saraki’s ambition. He must engage him fair and square.

It’s been nearly 30 days in the quandary; that’s neither what Nigerians deserve nor voted for. Buhari, as president and leader of his party, must either use the carrot, the stick or both, to whip his party quickly into line.

The National Assembly Complex: A Closer Look (photos)

Unknown | 6/10/2015 04:25:00 pm | Be the first to comment!
The National Assembly complex of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, is an eye-catching architectural masterpiece that houses a bicameral legislature established under section 4 of the Nigerian Constitution consisting of a Senate and a 360-member House of Representatives. The body, scissored after the federal Congress of the United States, is designed to guarantee equal representation of the states irrespective of size in the Senate and proportional representation of population in the House.

The National Assembly complex is located in the three arm zone of the Federal Capital Territory, Abuja. With its distinctive features and dome shaped roof, it is one of the architectural landmarks in the Nigeria capital city of Abuja. The symbolic complex was constructed by I.T.B. Nigeria Limited, part of the construction division of the Chagoury Group which was established in 1995. The construction company which has a growing demand for specialist, civil engineering services is one of the few civil engineering and construction firms whose head office and main operations are in Africa.

The award of contract for the construction of the parliamentary edifice was made on February 18, 1996 by the Federal Capital Development Authority the prime consultants under the auspices of the Federal government of Nigeria with a contract sum of N7.0 billion. I.T.B Nigeria Limited was saddled with the responsibility of designing and constructing two chambers of the National Assembly Complex which comprises the House of Representatives and Senate, a Library, Restaurant, Offices and associated external works within a stipulated period of 30 months. The complex came to live in 1998

The National assembly complex was modeled after ‘The United States Capitol’, atop Capitol Hill at the eastern end of the National Mall in Washington, D.C. Capitol is the seat of the United States Congress, the legislative branch of the U.S. Federal Government, completed in the year 1800.

The National assembly complex consists of 40,000 square metres gross floor area of concrete structure for both the legislative and senatorial arm of the National assembly. The two chambers of the complex is serviced by a central atrium. The complex is composed of a large lobby with a dome at a height of 50 metres, and the two chambers for the house of representatives and Senators, accommodating 650 seats and 150 seats respectively.

The extremely short construction period (30 months), made it necessary for ITB Nigeria limited to develop a construction system to meet the project deadline. The structural element was therefore a combination of insitu concrete and pre-cast elements. The internal partitions are in plastered and painted concrete block walls, with high quality profile aluminium glazed windows and doors. The ceiling is finished with acoustic suspended ceiling type while the floor is finished with a combination of vitrified tiles, marble tiles and granite tiles.
The state-of-the-art mechanical and electrical installation includes a central air-conditioning system, fire fighting and fire detection system, access control systems and standby generators.

The complex has been provided with a sophisticated voting system, sound distribution system, building management system and close circuit T.V. (CCTV). There are also meeting rooms, hearing rooms, committee rooms, single offices for elected members, and a clinic, library and printing room. The complex includes a 80,000 square metres ceremonial plaza, which can accommodate more than 1000 people at any one time.

The dome of the National assembly- an ancient architectural adoption of developed countries has been a subject of controversy towing along religious lines. Atop the dome is the nation’s coat of arm.

A dome (from Latin: domus) is an architectural element that resembles the hollow upper half of a sphere. Even its precise definition has been a matter of controversy. Domes have a wide variety of forms and specialized terms to describe them. A dome can rest upon a rotunda or drum as it is with the dome of the National assembly complex. It can be supported by columns or piers, that transition to the dome through squinches or pendentives. A lantern may cover an oculus and may itself have another dome.

Domes have a long architectural lineage that extends back into prehistory and they have been constructed from mud, stone, wood, brick, concrete, metal, glass, and plastic over the centuries. The symbolism associated with domes includes mortuary, celestial, and governmental traditions that have likewise developed over time.

However, the dome of the National Assembly building complex has raised eye brows over the years as to its symbol. Some argue that it has Islamic affiliations though what seats atop the dome is the country’s coat of arm. That brings me to this question; Is the dome really a symbol of Islam? That’s a topic for another day.

Senator Bukola Saraki and Yakubu Dogara were yesterday elected as senate president and speaker of the upper and lower house of the country’s bicameral National assembly respectively.

Ladies; 6 Reasons Why You May Feel Pain In Your Vagina

Unknown | 5/18/2015 07:22:00 am | Be the first to comment!
Image result for woman viginal pictureLadies can always relate to a sort of pain they feel after a rough bout of sex. There are however other types of pain women feel in their vaginas that may be an indication of something more serious. The cause of the pain may not be too difficult to find out. There are varying and different amounts of pain women may feel in their vagina and these may have a wide range of causes. This article will highlight 6 of the most common causes of pain in the vagina and what the symptoms are. It will also tell you what to do if you experience such pains.

1. Herpes
Herpes is a form of sexually transmitted infection that causes serious vagina pains. It is estimated that 1 out of 10 people will come down with a herpes infection in their lifetime. Herpes infection is characterised by visible blisters and intense pain in the vagina. If you have any of these symptoms, it is best you visit a hospital as soon as possible where you can be given medications to reduce the outbreak of the blisters and the pain.
2. Yeast Infections
In the real sense, yeast infections don’t give pain but pain comes up in the vagina as a result of dryness and itching which a lot of people will call pain. There is a high probability that every woman would experience a yeast infection in her life time. It is good that you get to see a doctor who would prescribe antifungal medications and creams that would eradicate the symptoms.
3. Vaginal Dryness
This is common in women that have reached menopause but can also be seen in younger women. It occurs in younger women mostly as a result of the use of birth control pills which reduces their estrogen levels. A lot of women have vagina dryness and as such, sex is usually painful and uncomfortable for them. The estrogen hormone acts like a moisturizer and if you’re on a birth control pill that inhibits or lowers it, the moisture and lubrication of your vagina would be affected. If you realise that you get unusually dry during sex, visit your doctor who can place you on water based lubricants, higher estrogen birth control pills or other topical creams.
4. His joystick
The female anatomical structure may get as much blame as the structure of your partners joystick too. You might want to consider if it’s pain from your partners penetration you experience or that of your vagina. Men with larger manlinesses can cause pain during intercourse way up in your vagina. This pain is somewhat hard to differentiate and you may have to consider less painful sexual positions which would be comfortable for the both of you.
5. Pelvic Inflammatory Disease
Pelvic inflammatory disease or endometriosis can be attributed to pain in your vagina during penetration or during your menstrual cycle. This occurs when the tissues lining the walls of your uterus begins to grow in other areas or when there is a swelling of any of the female reproductive organs. Women may also experience excessive bleeding during their menstrual flow. This would require an ultrasound pelvic scan and your doctor would probably place you on hormonal therapy and analgesics.
6. eal
The discomfort of vulvodynia occurs mostly during the insertion of a Tampon or during sexual penetration. In certain women, the pains occur without sexual penetration or touching of the vagina area. This condition comes and goes which adds to the mystery behind it. It is mostly treated with topical creams. For some women, pings of pain are spontaneous and unrelated to sex or touching the area in any way.
Well, the fact remains that if the pains you experience are normal, you should be better in a few days except it is extraordinary. If you feel the pain is out of hand, see your doctor as soon as possible.

Police Arrests 21 Men With 122 Condoms In Ibadan For Belonging To Gay Cult

Unknown | 5/18/2015 07:15:00 am | Be the first to comment!
Image result for picture of arrested black criminalThe Nigerian Police have arrested 21 young men under the age of 25 for allegedly belonging to a gay cult.

The men were arrested in Ibadan last week after allegedly being caught at a birthday party with about 122 condoms.

Although the organizer of the event claimed that it was just a birthday party, the policemen accused them of holding an initiation into an ‘evil gay cult’ after the discovery of 122 condoms and the absence of females.

The policemen said that they had received a tip claiming that the occupants of the room were gay.

The police also said that the absence of females corroborated with the claim of their informant that it was indeed a gay cult.

A human rights organisation, The Initiative for Equal Rights (TIER) has since spoken out against the arrest of the young men after receiving a call on May 10, 2015.

“At the point of arrest, the young men were physically assaulted and treated in a manner unbecoming of any legal process: they were photographed in their underwear, made to write statements under duress and locked up in an overcrowded cell,” the spokesman of the organization said.

The police initially refused to grant the young men bail and transfer of the case to the state courts until the intervention of a lawyer from the International Center for Reproductive Health and Sexual Rights (INCRESE).

They were given different bail notices from N5,000 to N10,000. The organiser of the party had to pay N21,000.

In spite of the way they were treated, the arrested young men refused to appeal against the treatment on order to prevent being branded as gay.

Reports revealed that 11 out of the 21 had been bailed by their family and friends, while 10 were left in detention. INCRESE however provided the fund for bail for the remaining 10 detainees and took them to a safe house.

The 21 claimed that the police further extorted money from each of them when they all returned to the police station on May 14, 2015 before they were allowed to leave.

“It is obvious that there is a need to create more public awareness and the need for victims to take up cases with solid support of the movement. Without this, cases like this will continue to occur with limited or no option for proper adjudication for justice”, the TIER spokesman said.

Woman, Daughter Stranded In India Over Hospital Bills (Photo)

Unknown | 2/09/2015 03:27:00 pm | Be the first to comment!
A Nigerian woman, Mrs. Deola Ogunfoworin, and her daughter, Ronke, are presently languishing at an Indian hospital after the family ran out of funds to treat the ailment for which Deola was flown abroad.

PUNCH Metro learnt that 53-year-old Deola, who was diagnosed of diabetes in 1994, and hypertension in 2009, had been flown to the Asian country on October 7, 2014, to undergo a kidney transplant.

In a medical report signed by one Dr. O.A. Kayode of the Kidney Clinics Nigeria Limited, Abeokuta, Ogun State, and obtained by our correspondent, Deola was referred to the Columbia Asia Hospital, Bangalore, India, for renal transplantation on September 25, 2014.

Kayode wrote, “The above named patient is a known chronic kidney disease patient with background type 11 Diabetes Mellitus and Hypertension. The patient has, however, opted for renal transplantation at Columbia Asia Hospital, Bangalore, India.

“She is medically fit to travel as no untoward complication is expected from her clinical condition.”

Our correspondent gathered that Deola was accompanied to India by 32-year-old Ronke.

It was learnt that when the woman started the treatment at the Indian hospital, an initial surgery done on her neck, gulped more than N3m, leaving the family helpless to carry on with the rest of the treatment.

Speaking with PUNCH Metro, the husband, Feyi Ogunfoworin, said, “When my wife was referred to India in Spetember last year, we rallied round for support and were able to raise more than N3m, hoping to spend it on the kidney transplant. Unfortunately when they arrived in the country, the hospital discovered a tumor, which needed to be operated, in her neck. The N3m went into the surgery.

“The actual transplant she went for has yet to be carried out. We have exhausted all our resources. Officials at the Indian hospital are hoping to ensure they start the transplant promptly, but we are at the end of the rope. Presently, Deola and Ronke are stranded in India as a result of our inability to pay the bills for my wife’s treatment.”

Our correspondent was told that Deola, as a result of ongoing treatment, could not speak on the telephone from the hospital bed.

In a report on Deola’s health by the Columbia Asia Hospital, signed by an official, Dr. Girish Namaghondlu, a consultant Nephrologist, the hospital confirmed that the woman was the hospital’s patient, adding that her treatment was being delayed due to “significant financial problems.”

He said, “She was presented to us from Nigeria seeking a transplant for end stage kidney disease on haemodialysis with background history of long standing diabetes and hypertension.

“Due to the above named problems, she has had prolonged stay at the hospital, and has been deemed unsuitable to receive a kidney transplant, and hence needs regular ongoing maintenance haemodialysis three times a week.

“I gather that there have been significant financial problems in continuing her treatment and her family is seeking financial aid in Nigeria. I strongly support this on humanitarian grounds.”
